Galveston Texas is rich in history and has over 200 Historical Markers, numerous museums, and many Monuments spread throughout the island for visitors to explore!
List of Museums:
Galveston Railroad Museum, Galveston Historic Seaport Museum, Galveston Navel Museum, Moody Mansion Museum, Galveston Children's Museum, The Bryan Museum, and the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Museum.
Galveston's first European settler was the pirate Jean Lafitte who established the initial colony in 1817. You can visit the remains of Lafitte's home at 1417 Harborside Drive. The marker was erected in 1965 by the Texas Historical Commission.
After 1836 Galveston became a wealthy seaport, known as the "Wall Street of the West." You can visit the historical seaport today and tour the museum. Purchase tickets through Galvestonhistory.org to step aboard the 1877 Ship Elissa.
You certainly don't want to miss touring one of the Broadway Mansions (1892 Bishops Palace & 1895 Moody Mansion). The Bishop's Palace, also known as the Gresham's Castle, is an ornate 19,082 square foot Victorian Castle designed by the famous architect Nicholas Clayton and was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The Moody Mansion is 28,000 sq.ft. and was built by a powerful Texas family who made their money in cotton, ranching, banking, insurance, and hotels. Go to Galvestonhistory.org to purchase tickets.
Tour the Bryan Museum on 21st Street. It houses the world's largest private collection of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West, spanning 12,000 years of history. It is located in the Historic Galveston Orphans Home and surrounded by exquisite grounds and landscaping.
You can't miss the Historic Strand District! By the 1880's, the Galveston Business District was hopping, and the Strand's collection of iron-fronted buildings were considered the finest concentration of 19th century commercial architecture in the nation! The Historic Strand District has Antique Shops, Restaurants, Gift Shops, and More. Don't miss a visit to the famous Candy Factory, "La King's Confectionery," for homemade candy, ice cream and more! Then jump right across the street to the 1895 Hutchings, Sealy & Co. Building. This is another building designed by Nicholas Clayton. Then try one of our favorite places to shop on The Strand: "Gracie's Gift Shop," located at 2022 Strand.
Finally, take time to spend a day on the famous Galveston beaches, considered the playground of the South! On the historic Seawall you'll want to carve out a little time to visit the Pleasure Pier (cottage is just a few blocks walking distance) with its many rides for the kids and restaurants. Finally, you must try to include a visit to Moody Gardens. Moody Gardens has a beach, golf course, 3D movie theatre, Aquarium, and so much more! Go to Galveston.com for all things to do in Galveston.
Please feel free when you're booking your reservation to ask any questions about things to do if you only have a few days, we would be happy to give you our recommendations.
